Type 1 diabetes occurs more commonly in children and young adults but can appear at any age.
Hyperglycemia.
Most often, patients with type 1 diabetes have symptoms of recent weight loss, increased thirst (polydipsia) or more frequent urination (polyuria). Other symptoms due to high blood sugars include-
- Feeling very hungry or tired
- Having sores that heal slowly
- Having dry, itchy skin
- Losing the feeling in your feet or having tingling in your feet
- Having blurry eyesight
Diabetic ketoacidosis
In approximately 30-40% of children with type 1 diabetes, ketoacidosis may be the first symptom of their disease. They usually have polyuria, polydipsia and weight loss but will be lot sicker, sometimes with drowsiness or confusion.
