Subcutaneously: Insulin may be administered via the subcutaneous route (injecting under the skin) with syringes and needles, insulin pumps, insulin pens, and Injection jets. Some patients who do not like repeated injections may opt for an insulin injection port which is to be used in conjunction with syringes.
Infusion: This method involves infusion through the intravenous route for a continuous delivery of insulin. This is done under strict medical supervision in a hospital setting with strict monitoring of blood sugar levels. It requires doctor’s prescription and is done in special emergencies involving very high levels of blood sugar.
